Full Support for Cloud Storage provider Nirvanix

Published: 7:09 AM GMT, Saturday, 12 September 2009

Whatever your feelings on the subject, there is no denying that cloud computing has changed the landscape of development. Whether it is ondemend processing from the likes of Amazon EC2, GoGrid, Google's GAE, messaging, database or storage, with such rich services at your finger tips, you shouldn't be limiting your creative output to the resources of a single machine.

OpenBD has always been forward thinking in terms of its deep hooks into the world of clouds. With core integration points for Amazon's SimpleDB and SQS services, we've made it extremely easy to utilise the cloud power of Amazon.

Storage is no different. We have strong support for Amazon's popular S3 disk storage service, and we are now proud to extend that support to another one of the big cloud storage providers, Nirvanix.

Amazon S3 is famed for its unlimited cheap pay-as-you-go online storage model. However it is not without some shortcomings, particularly when it comes to partitioning child accounts and rich media support. Nirvanix, one of the original pioneers of online storage, plugs these holes with a very rich storage model.

They offer the ability to create as many child accounts as you wish and for you to limit the storage and bandwidth of each of these accounts. The master account receives all the billing, at a similar pay-as-you-go low cost price. This enables you to offer your users online storage without having to worry about your online costs rocketing beyond your control.

In addition to this very powerful feature, Nirvanix offers a rich set of media operations. You can upload a video file, and have them convert it to flash. Upload an image, and have them resize it, rotate it, or create a thumbnail for you. Audio files also have their supporting functions.

All in all, Nirvanix is a great alternative to the popular Amazon S3 service, and now, all this power is at your finger tips with OpenBD and CFML. Built in to the core engine, because we believe, cloud computing is the future, and it shouldn't be an addition/plugin, it should be available to everyone out-of-the-box.

Available from the nightly builds and soon as part of our official release.
